Gulf Pearl Hotel's Resort Expansion

Gulf Pearl is a five-star hotel in Manama whose strategy is to offer luxury, highly personalized service at premium prices. Management plans to open a new resort wing in 18 months. The HR director has been told that the wing's hiring, training and pay policies must be different from those of the group's budget hotel next door, because guests paying premium rates expect a matching level of service. To estimate staffing needs, the HR director first asks the supervisors of each small unit, such as the front desk and the pastry kitchen, to estimate how many people they will need. Department heads then add their own estimates, and the figures are discussed, justified and revised with senior management until a final total is agreed. The final forecast shows the hotel will need 40 more chefs and housekeepers, but a labor market study finds very few trained candidates available locally. At the same time, a new automated laundry system means the laundry department will have 12 more workers than it needs. Several of these laundry workers are close to retirement age, and the owners want to avoid layoffs.

Al Waha Bank Hires Data Analysts

Al Waha Bank in Bahrain needs to fill several new data analyst positions. HR first announces the vacancies on the bank's intranet, and any current employee who meets the stated qualifications may apply. One internal applicant is selected. To find more candidates, the bank offers staff a cash reward for every friend they recommend who is hired. The bank also sets up a stand at a University of Bahrain recruitment event, where its team meets more than 300 graduating students in a single day. During selection, HR quickly reviews all résumés and removes applicants who clearly lack the required degree. The remaining candidates sit a test measuring general reasoning, memory, verbal fluency and numerical ability. The finalists are then given a set of the bank's customer data and asked to build an analytics spreadsheet within two hours. While reviewing results, the HR manager notices a problem: one candidate who sat the reasoning test twice, a week apart, received very different scores, even though nothing had changed in the candidate's preparation or in the test conditions.
سؤال 1

[Lecture 4] Identify the three recruitment methods Al Waha Bank used and classify each as an internal or external method.

سؤال 2

[Lecture 5] Name the selection step in which applicants without the required degree were removed, and identify the type of selection test used at each of the two testing stages.

سؤال 3

[Lecture 5] Which characteristic of a properly designed test is in doubt because of the problem the HR manager noticed? Explain why this matters for the bank.
